The Abbey of New Clairvaux is the first Trappist-Cistercian monastery in the Americas to grow, vinify and bottle its own wine. The winery is situated on what was once Leland Stanford’s Great Vina Ranch, reputedly the world’s largest winery operation in the 1890s. The Abbey purchased the land for a new monastery in 1955; dairy and orchard farming served as their main source of support in the early years. The order has a strong agricultural and winemaking foundation dating back to the 12th century in Europe. New Clairvaux planted its first vines in 2000, bottled its first wines in 2003, and now produces around 7,000 cases annually.

Spencer Shirey Wines located near Bangor on 12 acres among the rolling wooded hills on the La Porte Road between Bangor and Brownsville. Pourings and tastings at the winery began in 2014 from grapes grown mostly in the North Sierra Foothills with a few exceptions, because Kimball Shirey, the wine maker, has some favorite vineyards for certain varitals like the cabernet sauvignon fruit from Calivaris County and the zinfandels from the Lodi area. The winery is a joint venture with Mary Spencer, Kimball’s wife co-owner and their children. Kimball develops their wines with an eye to pairing the wines with food. The boutique winery typically produces 50 cases of each varietal or blend which they sell out. The winery is open 12 to 4 Saturdays and Sundays and can be reached at (530) 521-8695, or spencershireywines.com.
Straw House Cellars is owned and operated by Tom and Beth Chase. The vines were planted 11 years ago with 400 head-trimmed tempranillo vines. Four years ago a second planting of mourvedre vines followed, and that planting has produced its first small amount of fruit. The newest planting of Grenache Noir looks to have taken to the area well, but will require a few growing seasons to see what it will really bring to the table. All Spanish varietals were chosen for the vineyard because of the climate similarities of Butte County and Southern Spain. Simplicity is what Tom strives for in his winemaking. His remarkable and robust tempranillo can be enjoyed in Chico at Spice Creek, Wine Time, Grana and The Kitchen Table restaurants.
